Dark City Directors Cut
Dark City is a masterpiece of science fiction cinema, which was unjustly ignored on it's cinema release yet gained a cult following on DVD. The original edition came out in the early days of DVD and whilst it features some great extras (especially the Roger Ebert commentary), an updated edition is long overdue.
Well, the wait is almost over as a special edition of the DVD hits region one on July 29th. More excitingly, the DVD is the often discussed directors cut of the movie, which runs some 25 minutes longer. Director Alex Proyas has discussed his problems with the theatrical cut in the past (particularly the somewhat unnecessary voice over) so it will be interesting to see his completed vision.

Edge of Darkness
Comedy racist Mel Gibson will be returning to the screen for his first role since 2002 in the adaptation of BBC series 'Edge of Darkness. Gibson will play "a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers the systematic corruption that led to his daughter's death." says Variety.

The Hobbit
Tolkien film fansite theonering.net has a detailed interview with Guillermo Del Toro in which he confirms that Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) are both on board to revisit their Lord of the Rings roles in the forthcoming Hobbit prequels. Del Toro also indicates that he will be faithful to the tone of the original films, with the only major differences being a slightly different colour palette and wherever possible the use of animatronics rather than CGI effects.
Del Toro is apparently a big fan of the one ring website and has already been seen posting on the message boards, suggesting that the site may be the one to watch for news on the film.

This new TV spot doesn't give a lot away, but does have some new footage. The film hits cinemas in a little over three weeks, so mainstream advertising should be hitting in a big way shortly.

New Dark Knight poster. Not as exciting as the previous poster, however this is the first to prominently feature Harvey 'two face Dent.Rumours currently have this film pushing the three hour mark. It will be interesting to see whether audiences have an appetite for a film this long which is, essentially, a comic book movie.

Following some delays and prevarication, Variety reports that Guillermo Del Toro has officially signed on to direct the Hobbit and its as yet untitled sequel, to be released in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer has been cast as Vittoria Vetra in Ron Howard's Da Vinci Code prequel, Angels and Demons.
Zurer plays the daughter of a CERN physicist who attempting to uncover the truth behind her father's murder. Robert Langdon becomes involved and together the two have to foil a terrorist plot . Yay.

Saturn & The End of Days
Whilst promoting Hellboy 2 at the New York Comic Con, Guillermo Del Toro indicated that he would know in the next week or so whether he would be directing The Hobbit movies. Del Toro went on to detail his plans for a forthcoming more personal film, entitled Saturn & The End of Days. A thematic sequel to The Devils Backbone and Pans Labyrinth, the film tells the story of a young boy, Saturn, who witnesses the end of the world whilst walking back and forth to the grocery store. Del Toro went on to say:-
“It’s like, what would happen if the Apocalypse was viewed by you [while] doing errands. You go back and forth and nothing big happens except the entire world is being sucked into a vortex of fire.”
Talking about independent vs Hollywood filmmaking, Del Toro stated:
“The small movies you have much more control. If I say this is the design of the fawn and the girl is going to do this or do that, that’s me. In Big Hollywood movies, you get a 50-page memo. It’s horrible. Independent filmmaking is like drawing a comic book, the Hollywood movie is like having five hands holding your hand while you’re drawing the comic book.”
Of course as well as the Hobbit Del Toro has his Frankenstein reimagining and HP Lovecraft adaptation The Mountains of Madness on the boiler, so it may be some time before we see this film but the idea sounds intriguing, and Del Toro's personal films are a lot more interesting than his more mainstream work, although Hellboy 2 looks as though it may cross this divide.

Incredible Hulk
New image from The Incredible Hulk. Confirmation too from a panel at NYCC, that Robert Downey Jr will cameo as Tony Stark in the film.We havent covered the recent stories regarding the apparent behind the scenes wrangling on the film, but apparently these have now been resolved. Apparently we will be seeing Marvel's preferred cut of the film, which is shorter and more ation orientated that the deeper character piece Edward Norton had in mind. Eagle eyed poster viewers have also pointed out that the screenplay is credited to 'Edward Harris' (Nortons middle name). Whether Norton intends to do the publicity rounds for the film remain up in the air.

Friday the 13th
Following the sucess of PG-13 remakes of Prom Night and The Eye, together with the disappointing box office of harder edged horror such as Halloween and Hostel 2, rumours were circulating that the Friday 13th reboot would carry the dreaded PG-13 rating. Not so, says the producer, who goes on to promise that the film will feature all the blood and sex of the series eighties heyday. In an e-mail to to website www.bloody-disgusting.com, producer Brad Fuller stated:-
Whilst many horror fans still have misgivings about the film, at least we know now this wont be a watered down, family friendly Friday 13th, which would have made no sense at all.
“None of our remakes have been PG-13. How do you remake a rated R horror movie and take the guts out literally and figuratively? What is F13 without sex, drugs and a really, really long sharp machete? And why would we, horror fans ourselves, produce a movie devoid of the things that made the title so appealing in the first place. So let me say for the record, that the F13 that we start shooting this Thursday is a full bodied, rated R film.
“It has insane kills that will be shown in all their glory- it has a group of college students who drink and even have sex. We are betting that if we don’t hold back that the audience will reward us for being bold in a time when some horror movies are playing the ratings game. So we embrace
the R-rating Friday the 13th will have…”

Very little has been revealed to date regarding the forthoming X Files sequel. It appears we now have the first indication of the plot, courtesy of the blurb for the forthcoming novelisation. The text on the back of the book reads as follows:-

Antichrist
Variety reports that Danish director Lars von Trier begins shooting horror film Antichrist shortly in Germany., based on a script co written with follow Dogme 95 director Anders Thomas Jensen.
The story tells of a couple who, after the death of their child, find out that the world wasn't created by God, but is the work of the Antichrist.
The film has a $1.5 million budget and will be shot in English.

Ghost in the Shell
Steven Spielberg has acquired the live action rights to popular Japanese anime film Ghost in the Shell, with plans to make the film in digital 3D. The original films story is almost impenetrable, and deals with complex philosophical questions about what it means to be human. It will be interesting to see whether the adaptation deals with these films, or goes down the more straightforward sci fi thriller route. The anime certainly features several action sequences that would look spectacular in live action 3D.
Jamie Moss, responsible for the recent Street Kings, will be handling the adaptation.

Austin Powers 4
Sources suggest that not only is a fourth Austin Powers film in the offing, the film is a lot further forward then previously thought, with the script completed and being sent out to potential actors. One such actress is supermodel Gisele Bundchen, who is being considered for the female lead, hence the gratuitous picture above .
I doubt the world is crying out for another Austin Powers, and this smacks of Mike Myers running to safe ground following the supposedly mixed reaction to test screenings of his forthcoming 'The Love Guru'. The new script is apparently told from Dr Evil's point of view, which may bring something to new to the proceedings.

Over on the official blog for Hellboy 2, Guillermo Del Toro talked a little bit more about plans for the forthcoming Hobbit adaptation. Whilst Del Toro is nnot yet officially on board as director, it appears things are moving along:-
Whew -- Not yet. BUT there has been a lot of movement. And for the last few weeks there has been a lot of creative / cast / crew / visual talks and agreements and we have witnessed great progress in areas that I cannot disclose or that have already leaked from other sources.
I am dying to share news but I have to be patient and wait until the papers are done and my attachment is real. Nevertheless- a LOT of progress in defining the films, their cast and crew. And, may I add, we are all happily in synch about all creative aspects so far and all willing and eager to move forth.
I cannot say more but if all's well the time will come To talk of many things: Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax -- Of cabbages -- and kings --

Three and Out
Trailer for the forthcoming British comedy 'Three and Out' starring Mackenzie Crook and Colm Meaney.

Oscar winner Adrien Brody has joined the cast of Dario Argento's forthcoming English language thriller, Giallo. The film tells of an American flight attendant who teams with an Italian investigator to search for her missing sister who has been abducted by a serial killer known only as 'Yellow'. Brody will star alongside Emmanuelle Seigner and Elsa Pataky.
This sounds like a more mainstream effort from Argento, and the presence of Brody in the cast should at least guarantee more attention than he has received for his recent work.

Wall E / Presto
Pixar are known for putting a short film before most of their theatrical films, and the forthcoming Wall E is no exception. Presto, the film in question, tells the story of Alec, a magician's rabbit who becomes increasingly disgruntled as a hat trick involving him makes his master famous. Uwe Boll
German director Uwe Boll is famous for his low rent adaptations of video games such as Alone in the Dark and the forthcoming Postal. Boll is also famous for his somewhat testy relationship with the critics, famously inviting some of his fiercest detractors to take him on in the boxing ring.
Boll was recently informed of an internet petition to get him to stop making movies. Boll responded that the petition would have to get to a milion signatures before he would even give it consideration. The Dark Knight has started the test screening process prior to its July release, and may be hitting problems. Some audience members have expressed discomfort at scenes involving the Joker [spoiler] pretending to be dead and lying in a body bag [end spoiler], feeling that the scene is in poor taste following Heath Ledger's death.

Pixar / Disney
At a recent press event Disney / Pixar gave details of their forthcoming animated films through to Christmas 2012. The slate is certainly diverse, with a few surprises (is anyone really crying out for Cars 2). The Hollywood Reporter has sent an early draft of the script to Oliver Stone's controversial president Bush biopic to a selection of George W Bush biographers, with the response being somewhat mixed, according to this article.
One biographer suggests that the script suggests that "the White House is run as a fraternity house with no reverence for hierarchy, the office itself or for the implications of policy". Sounds about right...
The film, starring Josh is planned to start filming on April 21st, with Stone indicating he would like to get the film released whilst Bush is still in office, and possibly before the November election.

Prom Night
We all know the film is going to be terrible, but kudos to whoever designed the in theatre marketing for the forthcoming Prom Night remake. No doubt chanelling the spirit of William Castle, the display stand looks like a normal theatre standee, but is designed to hold a member of staff who jumps out at anyone who takes too close a peak.

Sex and Death 101
After operating under the radar for what seems like an eternity, Daniel Waters, screenwriter of Heathers is back with existential comedy 'Sex and Death 101'. The LA Times has an interesting, if pretentious, interview with Waters here . The most interesting revelation here is that Heathers-Lite teen comedy Mean Girls was actually directed by Water's brother.

With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Leatherheads, the George Clooney directed commentary released this weekend has caused some controversy, with Clooney cutting back his membership with the Writers Guild of America due to a dispute over authorship of the film.
Clooney suggests that he rewrote the majority of the script, and requested a co-writing credit. Under WGA rules a director must be responsible for at least 50% of the script, and they felt that he had not passed this threshold. Sole credit therefore went to the original authors, Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly.
Clooney has not quit the guild entirely, as this would leave him effectively unable to work as a screenwriter in Hollywood, but has instead gone 'Fi Core'.
According to Variety, going fi-core means a member is still technically a member of the WGA, but has limited rights within the guild. Fi-core members have to pay dues and are covered by the health and pension plans. However they are not entitled to vote, or have any of the other benefits afforded to guild members.
Clooney has in the past being a solid advocate of Unions, indicating he would not attend the Oscars if the WGA strike was not resolved, and is also instrumental in attempting to begin negotiations on new contracts for actors and directors.

Incredible Hulk
New promotional featurette, apparently playing in theatres in the USA, for the forthcoming Hulk reboot. Early excitement about this film appears to have died down somewhat with the film having a much lower profile than the other big summer movies. Notwithstanding this with Edward Norton on board as both star and co-writer, i'm still looking forward to the films' June release.

Possibly inspired by the buzz surrounding Pixar's forthcoming Wall-E, Dimension Films has announced a remake of 80's classic Short Circuit. The original writers, S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, are on board. The film will reportedly be a fairly close remake, but will take account of advances in technology.
No word whether Steve Guttenberg is involved, or whether he will be too busy crying gently to himself and wondering where it all went wrong.

Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg
Edgar Wright has signed a two picture writing and directing deal with Working Title films in the UK. Whilst the first of the films will be a solo effort, the second., At The Worlds End, will reteam him with Simon Pegg. Theres little detail on the films to date, although Aint It Cool News speculates that The Worlds End may be an apocalyptic comedy dealing with Lizards ruling the earth. Kind of like David Icke meets V?
Not sure where this leaves Wright's planned superhero comedy 'Ant Man', which he is co-writing with Joe Cornish, of Adam and Joe semi-fame.

Surveillance
Trailer for the forthcoming 'Surveillance' written and directed by Jennifer Lynch and produced by her father David, the film stars Bill Pullman, Michael Ironside and Julia Ormond.
Hopefully this will be more successful than Lynch Jr's last big screen effort, the ill fated Boxing Helena. A distinct lack of Julian Sands already makes this film look more promising.

Will you personally do a lot of interviews and so on to promote this film or will it be more the actors for interviews etc?
Kevin said: “I imagine I’ll be out there doing interviews to promote the flick, as per usual.”
When do you have to have the movie ‘locked’?
Kevin said: “Like, the day before it hits theaters (some folks make changes right up until then). But we’re scheduled to be done by second week of September.”
Any talk on Z&M being part of any of the film festivals this year?
Kevin said: “The only fest it’d be eligible for, schedule-wise, would be Toronto. But there’s been no talk about doing any fest screenings, really.”
Are you working on Z&M daily right now? What I mean is there something that needs doing every day?
Kevin said: “Today, we broke the film down into reels to send to the composer so he can get to work on some cues, then laid in some CG shots. Earlier this morning, I was cutting the ‘net teasers.”
Any chance if the test screenings go well that the release date might be bumped up to late summer/early fall?
Kevin said: “Nope. Too crowded there.”
Will you publish the script? No, I’m not looking to read it before it comes out, I mean “eventually”.

How did the Weinstein co. set your budget? Did you say “I need $25 Million” or did they just toss a briefcase at you full of cash?
Kevin said: “Scott and Laura budgeted the flick based on five day work weeks and salary projections, and we arrived at $25mil (which is actually kinda cheap).”
Why is this budget set so much higher than your previous films (excluding Jersey Girl)? Did the Weinstein Co. like the script more, or did you know you would need more money than on previous films?
Kevin said: “To be fair, it’s only five mil more than “Jay and Silent Bob” (and ten million less than “Jersey Girl”). And most of that price difference, as you might imagine, has more to do with salaries than anything else.
“Clerks II” cost five million largely because a) we were in one location the whole time, with limited movement, and b) nobody really got paid (I did the movie for free, when all was said and done). This flick’s a bit more complicated than that flick, and it stars a guy who gets more than scale at this point, so the budget’s bound to be bigger.”
What ever happened to the Chasing Amy 10th Anniversary DVD?
Kevin said: “The Disney/Weinstein rift happened. We were game, but the folks at Disney Home Video slowed it all to a stand-still. Jerks.”

How did the Weinstein co. set your budget? Did you say “I need $25 Million” or did they just toss a briefcase at you full of cash?
Kevin said: “Scott and Laura budgeted the flick based on five day work weeks and salary projections, and we arrived at $25mil (which is actually kinda cheap).”
Why is this budget set so much higher than your previous films (excluding Jersey Girl)? Did the Weinstein Co. like the script more, or did you know you would need more money than on previous films?
Kevin said: “To be fair, it’s only five mil more than “Jay and Silent Bob” (and ten million less than “Jersey Girl”). And most of that price difference, as you might imagine, has more to do with salaries than anything else.
“Clerks II” cost five million largely because a) we were in one location the whole time, with limited movement, and b) nobody really got paid (I did the movie for free, when all was said and done). This flick’s a bit more complicated than that flick, and it stars a guy who gets more than scale at this point, so the budget’s bound to be bigger.”
What ever happened to the Chasing Amy 10th Anniversary DVD?
Kevin said: “The Disney/Weinstein rift happened. We were game, but the folks at Disney Home Video slowed it all to a stand-still. Jerks.”

The Informant
Scott Bakula will star in Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming thriller The Informant.
Matt Damon is already attached to the project.
Bakula will play an FBI agent who exposes an international price-fixing scheme with the help of an unstable biochemist played by Damon.
The film is based on a true story, with Scott Burns writing the screenplay.

Justice League Mortal
Various sites are reporting a rumour that Haydyn Christensen will be putting on the red and blue garb as Superman in the forthcoming Justice League movie. This story apparently emanates from someone who overheard Christensen talking at a bar, so take this with a large grain of salt.
Christensen is of course most famous for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker, and his casting will no doubt add further controversy to a film which is already struggling to win the support of comic book fans.

Star Wars fans with more money than friends can now liven up their homes with these life size replicas of C3PO and R2D2. Made of fiber glass, the life size figures come complete with voice and light functions. Of course, such quality doesn't come cheap, with a cost of $11,500 for the pair.

Redbelt
Trailer for the new David Mamet film Redbelt. Whilst the trailer suggests a somewhat routine thriller, with Mamet as board as writer director, i'm willing to bet there is much more of interest within the fim itself.

Hancock
New promotional image from Will Smiths summer blockbuster, Hancock. Word on the film has been mixed. Whilst the trailer showed promise, reviews of early screenings suggest that pretty much all the good stuff is contained therein. The film also apparently takes some strange turns involving Will Smith as an ancient god. Rumours that Jazzy Jeff plays jesus are unconfirmed.

The Hobbit
Sir Ian McKellen has confirmed his intention to reprise his role as Gandalf in the forthcoming Hobbit films.

In a question and answer session on his official website, McKellen was asked "Will you again be our Gandalf in The Hobbit now that the deal is settled?" Sir Ian answered, "Yes I will, if Peter Jackson and I have anything to do with it, he being the producer and me being, on the whole a very lucky actor."
Asked whether executive producer Peter Jackson had approached him about reprising the role, McKellen elaborated:-
"Encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!"

War Inc
Poster for the new John Cusack satirical comedy 'War Inc'. Although Cusack plays another troubled hitman, early rumours of this being a semi-sequel to Grosse Pointe Blanke appear to be slightly wide of the mark. The official synopsis reads:-
"War, Inc. is a a political satire set in Turaqistan, a country occupied by an American private corporation run by a former US Vice-President (Dan Akroyd). In an effort to monopolize the opportunities the war-torn nation offers, the corporation's CEO hires a troubled hit man, played by John Cusack, to kill a Middle East oil minister. Now, struggling with his own growing demons, the assassin must pose as the corporation's Trade Show Producer in order to pull off this latest hit, while maintaining his cover by organizing the high-profile wedding of Yonica Babyyeah (Hilary Duff) an outrageous Middle Eastern pop star, and keeping a sexy left wing reporter (Marisa Tomei) in check."
War Inc opens in the USA on May 23rd, and later in the year in the UK.

Fanboys
The saga of 'Fanboys' continues with the news that we will now be seeing not one but two versions of the film.
Fanboys tells the tale of a group of friends and Star Wars fans. When one of the friends is diagnosed with terminal cancer the group attempt to break into George Lucas's ranch in order to obtain a pre release print of 'The Phantom Menace' for hiim to view before his death.
The film was picked up by the Weinstein company, who decided that the whole cancer sub plot was a potential audience turn off and re-edited the movie to remove all references to it. Both versions were test screened and received almost identical scores. Despite this the Weinsteins' were all set to go with the new melanoma light version.
One thing they didnt count on was that a film called Fanboys would attract a lot of, well, fanboys, who have expressed their displeasure at the editing of the film.
As a result of the furore the Weinstein Company have now announced that both versions of the film will be released on DVD.
There is no word yet as to which, if any, version will see a cinema release, nor any indication of a release date. Given the Weinstein's previous track record this could be an indication that they are preparing to dump the film out there as cheaply as possible and cut their losses. In this instance though the presence of Seth Rogen amongst the cast pretty much guarantees a reasonable audience for any cinema release.

Meet Dave
Trailer for the forthcoming Eddie Murphy 'comedy' Meet Dave, in which he continues to piss away whatever talent he once has.
Murphy plays a human shaped spaceship who falls in love with Elizabeth Banks. Murphy, re teaming with Norbit director Brian Robbins, also plays the miniature alien pilot of the ship.
Dave opens July 11th in the USA.
The Wolfman
Producer Scott Stuber has been talking to Empire Online about the effects for the forthcoming Wolfman remake. Pleasingly, albeit somewhat surprisingly, they will be attempting to use practical effects wherever possible. Stuber states:
"We really want to stick to the physical stuff. So much of what we're trying to accomplish is that when Benicio is the wolf, you really know it's Benicio Del Toro and you have the eyes and the emotion of what he is. "

Although not strictly movie related, fans of South Park may want to head over to the new official website which, amongst other items, features streaming versions of every show released. Even better, the episodes are absolutely free of charge.
The one caveat is that UK and Australian viewers will have to wait a little while longer until they can use the service, due to some rights difficulties. Of course, the more IT literate of you will know this is not something that is particularly difficult to circumvent.
As far as I am aware this is the first time the entirety of a major series has been placed online for free, and it will be interesting to see whether other shows follow suit.

Bob Marley Biopic
Further to last weeks news that the Weinstein Brothers had optioned the rights to a movie based on the biography of Bob Marley's wife, the film has hit a major stumbling block, and one you thought might have come to light before they signed the deal.
Despite the fact that the film is being produced by Marley's widow, Rita, the sale of her book rights naturally didn't include rights to use any of the music.
Martin Scorsese has already licensed the song rights for his forthcoming Marley documentary, and the Marley family are now suggesting that they wouldn't be interested in providing the songs to a competing project.
"All our efforts and support are currently directed toward the documentary," Ziggy Marley said. "We believe that this project is the best way to represent our father's life from his perspective, and any other film project pertaining to our father will be empty without his music to support it."
Suggestions are that the Marley family would acquiesce only if there was to be a significant delay between the release of the documentary and the film, which by their reckoning would push the project back to around 2015.

Spine Tingler - The William Castle Story
Trailer for the forthcoming documentary about the films of William Castle. Castle was best known for his showmanship and gimmicks, including flying skeletons on strings above the audience, selling life insurance policies to guard against those dying of fright during the film and, most famously, placing shock buzzers under cinema seats for 'The Tingler'
