Defiance

Early poster Ed Zwick's second world war film Defiance ,which tells the true story of three Jewish brothers who whilst on the run from the Nazis band together to form a resistance group to save other Jews during WWII. Jamie Bell, Liev Schreiber, and Daniel Craig play the brothers and the film is due for release on 19 December, just in time for Oscar consideration.

Robocop is a Cylon

MGM are currently touting this teaser poster in relation to their forthcoming remake. This is aimed at licensees for toys etc. and the film is still at an early stage of department. Therefore this image may well not represent the final look of Robocop in the film. Which is good, because he looks like a smirking Battlestar Galactica reject. More importantly, the original film is great and still hold up today, making this redo officially pointless.

Atari

Leonardo Di Caprio will produce and star in a biopic of Nolan Bushnell, one of the founders of Atari computers, and creator of 'Pong'. Bushnell is one of the most important historical figures in what is now a multi billion dollar industry, and the rise and fall of Atari certainly has cinematical potential. As long as Uwe Boll doesnt sign on to direct, this could be one to watch.

Beverly Hills Cop 4

Another 80's series is set for a revival, with news that Eddie Murphy will return to his Beverly Hills Cop franchise next year, in a new film helmed by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner. Apparently the new film will be aimed at a more friendly audience, according to this quote from MTV news

When asked what is biggest challenge would be, Ratner seemed to indicate that his new film would be geared towards a very PG audience.
“10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”

No word on whether Murphy will attempt to play every character in the film.

Paul W S Anderson (the untalented one for those who get confused with Boogie Nights / There Will Be Blood helmer Paul Thomas Anderson) is remaking Death Race 2000, with Jason Statham in the David Carradine role. Here's a picture of his shiny new car.

No word yet on who will playing Sylvester Stallone, or whether bizarre comments about baked potatoes will remain from the original.

In a neat nod to fans of the TV series, Lou Ferrigno will provide the voice of the Hulk in this summers reboot according to Variety. Of course Hulk never spoke in the original series, but it appears we will finally get the chance to hear 'Hulk Smash.

Mother of Tears

Shock Till You Drop has an exclusive clip from 'Mother of Tears', Dario Argento's long awaited conclusion to his Three Mothers trilogy. Rumours are the film marks a return to form for Argento, and if this clip is anything to go by the film certainly isnt skimping in the gore department.

Judd Apatow's next

Judd Apatow, director of the 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, has provided MTV.com with details of his next directorial project.

The film, which apparently features more dramatic elements than his previous films will centre on Adam Sandler (yuk) and Seth Rogen as a pair of stand up comics. The film will also co-star Leslie Mann (co-star of Knocked Up and Apatow's wife).

Hopefully the film will banish memories of the last attempt of a film set behind the scenes of the stand up comedy set, the godforsaken Tom Hanks / Sally Field vehicle 'Punchline'

Saved by the Bell and Showgirls star Elizabeth Berkely as joined the cast of S Darko, the somewhat redundant Donnie Darko sequel that has begun production. RIP Sidney Pollack

Sidney Pollack, director of Tootsie and Out of Africa, amongst many others, has died aged 73. Pollack was also known as an actor, with supporting roles in many of his own films, as well as Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut.

The Hobbit

Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson recently hosted a web chat regarding the forthcoming Hobbit Movies. The full transcript can be found here. Amongst the highlights

* The look of the films will be consistent with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, however some creatures will be redesigned and there will be a greater reliance on practical rather than CGI effects.

* Wherever possible, they will avoid recasting characters. Some characters who appeared in Lord of the Rings but not the Hobbit may make an appearance in the second film.

*Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are definitely returning

*The reminder of the year will be spent writing the films, with Del Toro scripting aongside LOTR writers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyems.

*2009 will be pre-production, with shooting in 2010 and release of the films in December 2011 and 2012

*Howard Shore will be returning to score the films

Dawn of the Dead 2

Following last weeks news of a 3d re-release of the second greatest horror movie ever made, producer Richard Rubinstein has announced plans to make a direct sequel to Dawn of the Dead (the original, not the remake). The film will pick up directly from where the original ended with the survivors escaping from a zombie infested shopping mall in a helicopter. Tony 'Candyman' Todd is in talks to star, presumably in the role played by Ken Foree in the original.

Flash Gordon

Theres obviously something in the water, as hot on the heels on the recently announced Highlander remake, Sony Pictures have acquired the rights to another 80's 'classic' featuring a Queen soundtrack, Flash Gordon.

Ok, the film, to be directed by Breck Eisner ('Sahara') will likely take it's nod from the original comic book and film serials as opposed to the camp eighties excess of Mike Hodge's version, but we can only hope that there's room for Brian Blessed to don his tights and bellow 'Gordon's alive!' one more time.

Terminator Salvation : The Future Begins

Still saddled with a terrible title and pg-13 rating, Warner have released the official plot synopsis for the first in the new Terminator trilogy:-

In the highly anticipated new installment of "The Terminator" film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Jake Gylenhall will be taking the lead role in Jerry Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia franchise. Based on the popular series of video games (the original of which is now nearly 20 years old!), Bruckheimer no doubt sees this as a replacement / follow on to the hugely profitable Pirates of the Carribean films.

Great, Saul Bass like, poster, for the forthcoming thriller Choke, based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. The official synopsis is as follows:-

Highlander

Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the screenwriters responsible for Iron Man, are to pen a remake of Highlander for Summit Entertainment, says the Hollywood Reporter.

It remains to be seen how they can better the combination of overblown Queen soundtrack and some of the most ridiculous accents ever heard that make the original such a memorable experience. The central concept remains a good one however, and a big budget makeover could be interesting.

Dawn of the Dead 3D

Aint it Cool News reports that George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, which vies with the Exorcist for the title of greatest horror film ever made will be getting the digital 3D treatment from New Amsterdam Entertainment. Whilst this will no doubt be a gimmick, any excuse to see this film on the big screen again can't be all bad.

Hellboy 2

Final poster for Del Toro's comic book fantasy sequel. This film looks fantastic, however it's relatively low profile means it's in danger of getting lost amongst the better known summer releases.

Bad Lieutenant

Abel Ferrera's hard hitting 'Bad Lieutenant', starring Harvey Keitel (and, unfortunately, a cameo from Little Harvey) is getting the remake treatment.

Nicolas Cage will be starring, and painful visions of his hammy histrionics in the role haunt me already.

But, and this is a big but, the film will be directed by Werner Herzog.  Herzog, who made a return to dramatic features with Rescue Dawn after a series of documentary films, is known for his arduous shoots and the sometimes surreal but always powerful films which result.  Whilst this is likely to be a mess, Herzogs involvement will mean it will at least be an interesting mess.

Is the working title for Jan De Bont's Point Break sequel.  IESB.net has the plot synopsis:-

When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he’s recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like “The Ex-Presidents,” a bank robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.
 
Hmmmmmmmm.....

Sounds slightly ridiculous, but then subtlety was never the original film's strong point and this story seems to leave the way open for the return of Patrick Swayze's character, if not Keanu.

Sgt Rock

Joel Silver has announced his intention to bring little known DC Comics character 'Sgt Rock' to the screen, with cheeky mockney Guy Ritchie attached to direct.

Whilst not having any particular super powers Sgt Rock seemed to take part in every single major event of World War 2 before going on to undertake covert work for the US Government.

Frankly, this sounds terrible, but as long as Ritchie avoids the temptation to cast old mate Vinnie Jones as the Sergeant I will keep an open mind.

TimeCrimes

Los Cronocrimenes (TimeCrimes to us gringos) is a mexican science fiction film which tells the tale of a man who gets caught up in a dangerous time loop when he tries to travel 30 minutes back in time to prevent a crime. The film has been a hit at festivals, and has been picked up by Magnolia pictures for United States distribution.

Given it's popularity, it is no surprise that a US remake is on it's way, with original director Nacho Vigalondo on board as producer, and Stephen Zallian tapped for scriptwriting duties.

Whilst this may seem like a run of the mill remake, Vigalondo has suggested that no less than David Cronenberg is in discussions to come aboard as director.

The themes of the film certainly seem a perfect fit for Cronenberg and will mark a return to sci-fi for the director following his more recent drama films. Suddenly this remake appears to be one to watch, although everyone should get a chance to catch the original if possible.

Michael Moore is working on a sequel / update to his polemic documentary Fahrenheit 9/11. Originally planned for a pre-election release, the Hollywood Reporter suggests that the film will not now hit theatres until 2009.

Point Break 2

Various sources report that Jan De Bont has announced he is to direct a sequel to eighties action classic Point Break.

The original screen writer is on board, but no word on whether Keanu Reeves or Patrick Swayze will be donning the surf gear again. Given Reeve's reported disdain for sequels and Swayze's current health problems it would seem unlikely.

21 Jump Street

Popular 80's teen drama 21 Jump Street, which featured a young Johnny Depp, may be getting a comedic re-do courtesy of Judd Apatow cohort Jonah Hill (Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall).

The original featured a group of young cops sent undercover in a local high school. Whilst the premise will no doubt be carried over Hill's involvement suggests that the tone will be somewhat different from the sometimes po-faced original.

Hill will be writing, co-producing and one assumes taking a role in the film, although little else is known at this time.

The A Team

It's been over a year since we last reported on John Singleton's A Team redo. With the film due for a release next year, more casting news has begun to surface, with rumours that Bruce Willis is in talks to play Hannibal, the cigar chewing team leader played by the late George Peppard on the TV Series.

Woody Harrelson has previously been mooted for the Murdoch Role, with Ice Cube as BA Baracus.

This leaves only Face to cast. Dirk Benedict is still around and looking in good shape for his age, so why not stick with at least one of the original cast members?

Bioshock

Gore Verbinski, of Pirates of the Caribbean infamy, has signed on to direct the movie version of popular video game Bioshock. The game is set in an underwater city and was one of the best reviewed games of last , year. John 'Gladiator' Logan will write the screenplay.

Video games have not made the best film adaptations in the past (Super Mario Brothers anyone?) but as the storyline of such games becomes more complex and cinematic, the crossovers start to make more sense. Unfortunately the long hoped for Hungry Horace movie is still trapped in development hell.

The first image of Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Banks as George and Laura Bush, comes with confirmation of previous rumours that the film will get a pre-election release, with Lions Gate releasing Oliver Stone's bio-pic on 18 October. Given the last time Stone attempted a rushed post production we ended up with Alexander and it's multiple re-cuts, lets hope he has the time to finish the film to his satisfaction.

S. Darko

In the news we have all been waiting for, a (presumably) straight to DVD sequel to Donnie Darko is on it's way. S Darko tells the tale of Donnie's now 18 year old sister (a returning Daveigh Chase) who begins to experience visions whilst on a road trip to Los Angeles.

Richard Kelly is unsurprisingly not returning, but directing duties have been passed to Chris Fisher, the auteur behind Nightstalker and Rampage : The Hill Side Strangler Murderers.

Iron Man 2

Following Iron Mans $100 million opening weekend, Marvel studios have confirmed a sequel will hit cinemas in May 2010. Robert Downey Jr is already on board, although Jon Favreau has yet to formally confirm his return to the director's chair.

Whilst many fans would like to see the famous 'Demon in a Glass Bottle' storyline, in which Tony Stark slips into alcoholism, it's questionable whether Marvel would want to risk their family franchise by dealing with such a controversial subject.

Mission Impossible 4

Despite his highly public fall out with Paramount last year, Tom Cruise may be returning to the studio for a fourth Mission Impossible film.

Given the muted reception to 'Lions for Lambs' and the bad buz surrounding his forthcoming WWII drama Valkyrie, it looks like Cruise is returning to safer ground, although the third film didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Watchmen

Joblo.com has the latest entry in it's Watchmen video production journals. This entry deals with costume design, which is one of the more controversial aspects of the film. Fans have complained about the changes to the comic book designs, whilst others have complained about the rubbery, unrealistic look of the finished designs. I'm witholding judgment until we see final footage, particularly bearing in mind the amount of post-production work that is likely to be done on the look of the film.

New trailer for M Night Shyamalan's 60's psychedelic freakout (not really) The Happening. This is the first Shyamalan film to supposedly carry an R rating, so it at least should carry more thrills than his last few efforts. Now if he would just hurry up and make an 'Unbreakable' sequel....

Dark City Directors Cut

Dark City is a masterpiece of science fiction cinema, which was unjustly ignored on it's cinema release yet gained a cult following on DVD. The original edition came out in the early days of DVD and whilst it features some great extras (especially the Roger Ebert commentary), an updated edition is long overdue.

Well, the wait is almost over as a special edition of the DVD hits region one on July 29th. More excitingly, the DVD is the often discussed directors cut of the movie, which runs some 25 minutes longer. Director Alex Proyas has discussed his problems with the theatrical cut in the past (particularly the somewhat unnecessary voice over) so it will be interesting to see his completed vision.

Jonah Hill, star of Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall is in talks to play the 'comedy sidekick' in Michael Bay's forthcoming Transformers sequel. Oddly enough, super bad is also a good description of the first Transformers film.

Edge of Darkness

Comedy racist Mel Gibson will be returning to the screen for his first role since 2002 in the adaptation of BBC series 'Edge of Darkness. Gibson will play "a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers the systematic corruption that led to his daughter's death." says Variety.

Martin Campbell will direct a script from William Monahan (The Departed).

The Hobbit

Tolkien film fansite theonering.net has a detailed interview with Guillermo Del Toro in which he confirms that Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) are both on board to revisit their Lord of the Rings roles in the forthcoming Hobbit prequels. Del Toro also indicates that he will be faithful to the tone of the original films, with the only major differences being a slightly different colour palette and wherever possible the use of animatronics rather than CGI effects.

Del Toro is apparently a big fan of the one ring website and has already been seen posting on the message boards, suggesting that the site may be the one to watch for news on the film.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

This new TV spot doesn't give a lot away, but does have some new footage. The film hits cinemas in a little over three weeks, so mainstream advertising should be hitting in a big way shortly.

The Dark Knight

New Dark Knight poster. Not as exciting as the previous poster, however this is the first to prominently feature Harvey 'two face Dent.

Rumours currently have this film pushing the three hour mark. It will be interesting to see whether audiences have an appetite for a film this long which is, essentially, a comic book movie.

Austin Powers 4

Seth Green has played down recent reports that a fourth Austin Powers film is in active development, telling MTV that the film is currently nothing more substantial than off-hand comments made by Mike Myers during promotion for the recent Shrek film.

Ewam McGregor, who must be wondering what happened to his career, will be appearing in Da Vinci code prequel Angels and Demons. McGregor will play "a powerful Vatican insider who assists" Tom Hanks' character as he investigates ancient religious order The Illuminati.
