The Damn United

Silence

Variety reports that Martin Scorsese will be returning to pet project 'Silence' as his next project Shutter Island. Scorsese has had the rights to the novel for years, writing a draft of the screenplay over a decade ago. The film nearly went into production in 2007.

Based on the Japanese novel, the film will follow a few Jesuit priests who head to Japan in the name of Christianity, only to discover that converts are being persecuted in defiance of Western influence. Daniel Day Lewis and Benicio Del Toro are set to star, with Gael Garcia Bernal in a supporting role.

Avatar

A somewhat blurry (possibly photographed from a computer screen?) first look at the Na'Vi, the all-CGI aliens from James Cameron forthcoming Avatar.

Considering the hype and money surrounding the film, we're hoping for something slightly more impressive when it finally hits screens.

Terminator Salvation

Wired Online has a new article containing some pretty interesting concept art for Terminator 4, together with some quotes from director McG. He's saying all the right things, but this is still a PG-13 Terminator flick from the maker of the Charlies Angels movies, so time will tell.

Tin Tin

Casting news aplenty on Steven Spielberg's / Peter Jackson's motion capture Tin Tin trilogy.  Spielberg will direct the first of the films and has just announced that Tin Tin will be played by Jamie Bell, of Billy Elliott fame.  Bell will be reunited with his King Kong co-star Andy Serkis, who takes on the Captain Haddock role.

Daniel Craig is taking on lead villain duties as Red Rackham.

Somewhat bizzarely, the Thompson Twins will be played by Shaun of The Dead / Hot Fuzz duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Watchmen

Now the legal shennanigans seem to have been sorted, here's the presumably final poster for Watchmen.  Whilst this photoshopped job lacks the imagination of earlier designs, anything that can drag a mainstream audience into a three hour R rated comic book movie is fine by me.

The Man who KIlled Don Quixote

Fans of Terry Gilliam will no doubt be aware of the saga of The Man who Killed Don Quixote.  The film was abandoned part way through after a multitude of misfortunes beset the crew.  The story is told in the excellent documentary Lost in La Mancha.

NOw Empire reports that Gilliam has started rewriting the script for the film, after finally getting the rights back following protracted discussions with the rights holders. 

Writing partner Tony Grisoni stated: "I re-read the greatest script ever written and realize we gotta get rewriting! I really wanna knock that one out in the next month or so." B

Gilliam says that he has "some very different ideas" for the film from the original incarnation, and that "[I'm] starting to think I was lucky, because maybe the film will be better seven years later. It will have matured a bit longer."

RIP Patrick McGahoon

Patrick McGahoon, best known for his roles in TV series The Prisoner and Danger Man has died aged 80. McGoohan also co-starred in numerous films, including a memorable turn in David Cronenerg's Scanners.

Karate Kid

Variety reports that Jackie Chan will take over from Pat Morita as Mr Miyagi in the Karate Kid remake.

The remake stars Jaden 'son of Will' Smith and in a change from the original will be set in Asia.

The Expendables

Mickey Rourke has signed on as the latest member of Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables. 

Rourke will join Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley in a story about an “expendable” team, hired to do jobs that no one else can or will.  Sounds like as cross between the Dirty Dozen and the A Team.

The team is sent to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow the ruthless dictator and liberate the country and is set to begin filming in Brazil and Louisiana in March.
